Make Something Monday #15

Make Something Monday

Here's another installment around the homestead from my handy hubby:

Our rabbit shelter.

This is where the bunnies are going to live. We have the cages, but have to put them together with a zillion little wire clamp thingies which require a special tool. We have the tool now, but on the day when I actually had time to go out and work on the cages, we didn't. So I haven't had another chance to get them together. Once the cages are together, Paul is going to make some kind of supports so they don't have to have legs under them and will be easier to clean under. Also, before next winter, we will put some kind of doors on the front that can be used to close up for really cold days.

Holly tested out the shelter and gave it her approval. Finn has also discovered the fun of throwing great handfuls of sawdust into the air and rolling in the sawdust until it covers every square inch of his body. Didn't get any pictures of that, though. Fresh barns are so much fun to play in until you put the animals in!

So hopefully, we will have rabbits coming soon. But at least they have somewhere to live when they come!

Back on the Net Again!

We're finally connected again. Not really sure why our other router crashed, but crash it did. We hoped it might be able to be reset so we didn't rush right out and buy a new one. But it took a while to find time to check it out because it's more complicated than I feel like going into and presumably nobody really cares anyhow! But I'm back now. Yay!

Things have been going well here. The baby is growing a bunch, but he's taking all the milk. I have been getting so little that I've been just dumping the couple tablespoons into the cats bowl before I come in the house! The plan was to shut up the babies from the mama overnight and milk her in the morning. But when the one baby died, I didn't have the heart to shut the remaining one up all by himself. He's a little bigger now and the weather is a little warmer, so I think I'm going to give it a shot this week. From what I've read, babies on the mama can actually take more milk than they really need. So I know that's why I'm getting so little from her right now, he's just taking every last drop! I'm anxious to see how much I will get with him off her for the night, though. And we settled on names for them. (Or I rather I did!) We're calling the mama Bella and the little guy Heckle. I was calling both babies Heckle and Jeckle after those two old cartoon crows, and it just stuck even when there was only one. (And thanks to those who added their condolences on the loss.)

And if you were wondering about the picture at the beginning of the post, Paul bought 30 pounds of seed potatoes to plant. I was like 30 pounds?! And he said, oh, it's not that much--only three little bags. It will be our first time planting potatoes, and I didn't even know he was planning to until he bought them! He got three different varieties, but with a typical male attention to detail doesn't know what varieties he bought. He's planning to get them planted this coming weekend. I have no idea how many potatoes we'll get from them, but I guess we'll have a better idea after this year! And here's a fascinating link to a page of potato myths. I found the last one particularly amusing and thought they should have prefaced the answer with, Potatoes taste best when prepared in fattening ways, but...(lead into healthy potato habits.)

He also set posts for our rabbit shelter. He decided to make it half for rabbits and half for greenhouse. He is just having them share a common wall between. So one side will be his greenhouse and the other side will be my bunnies. Hopefully we'll be able to get some next month. I've seen someone advertising New Zealand rabbits with regularity in our local Trader's Guide, so I think they probably breed them. I haven't called about them yet since we aren't ready for them and usually when I do something like that, we wind up deciding to get them and then scrambling to get living quarters together! So I'm trying my best to hold off and not wind up doing that again, since I am normally the one who winds up talking him into taking these things on.

Well, I should wrap up now, but I'll be back tomorrow for Make Something Monday--which I've missed participating in for the last couple weeks and am so glad I can participate again!

First Post of the Year

Should I spend my first post of the year complaining? Yes, I think I will...

I've got two sick kids for the new year (not to mention myself.) Finn only has a "fluffy" nose, and it doesn't seem to be slowing him down. Holly, on the other hand, seemed to wake up with the same thing Finn had, but she's either got something else or is just taking it much worse. She's been throwing up so much I feel like I'm getting buried in laundry. I even feel like I cheated today and popped her into disposable diapers since I didn't feel like keeping up with laundry on the diapers, too. She had me up for an hour in the night just holding her in the living room and trying to get her to sleep. I had a feeling she might be sick during the night, so I had lined the bed with a blanket so I didn't have to do sheets during the night. Turned out to be a good precaution. We took her to the doctor's this morning and she had a fever of 102.7. She felt cooler than she had during the night, but I hadn't taken her temp during the night. They did a strep test which came back clear and they wanted a urine test to see if she had a UTI, but we never managed to collect any urine. They stuck this funky thing in her diaper which closed up and didn't catch anything. They sent us home after we were there 2.5 hours. But we were supposed to bring back pee. Since the plastic catch thingy didn't work, I thought I'd just hold her on my lap without a diaper and catch some in the little sample cup they gave us. But it took so long, I wasn't paying attention and only wound up with a wet lap. I put in a call to the doctor's office to tell them I wasn't having any luck getting it, but I only got voice-mail and nobody called back until after the office was closed. They suggested I put some cotton balls in her diaper and wring them out into the cup. But since an antibiotic had already been called into the pharmacy, I wondered what the point of taking a urine sample in Monday would be, but she said to go ahead and do it. Frustrating...

Anyhow, at the moment, Holly is actually playing on the floor for the first time all day, I think. She had some baby Motrin and pretty good nap and wasn't so screamy when she woke up. Thank goodness. Out of my three kids, this girl has been the fussy one anyhow-even on a good day. Catch her when she is sick and she makes people want to remain childless! She actually tried to pry the nurse's fingers off this little instrument they wanted to measure her pulse with screaming madly all the while. They wound up giving up. She's only ten months old, where does this temper come from?

Okay, that's off my chest. I do have something less whiney. It's something I have been wanting for a while--we bought two rabbit cages the other night. I don't want to offend or gross anyone out, but these are going to be meat rabbits (ie. their offspring will be gracing our dinner table.) My hubby had this three-step plan for getting rabbits. First was that we had to taste rabbit and make sure we liked it. Fair enough--who wants to bother raising them if we won't eat them? So I found a place to order some rabbit meat online and had it shipped to us. We barbecued it and everyone in the family liked it. Step two was that he said we needed to get a rabbit and make sure we could go through with the deed. That's sort of where the plan hung up because I didn't actually know anyone with meat rabbits and I had this mental block about buying a rabbit from the store to do. But then, a couple weeks back, we sent our first roosters to freezer camp. My hubby had promised to dispatch if I would butcher. Let's just say it didn't go off quite as planned, and my husband wound up promising to build whatever else I wanted around here for animals. And I guess he was serious because when we saw some cages the other night that were a good price, he said to get them and I didn't even have to ask. We still need a couple more cages and to set up a spot to put them, but it's a start and now we can work on step three--getting rabbits!

Good grief...this post seems to have taken on book-like proportions. Well, if you managed to slog through this all, thanks for reading!

About This Blogger

I am a thirty-something mother of two girls and a boy ranging from preschool to middle school. My husband and I keep working and reworking on our goal of raising our family healthier. Our house is a constant work under construction--adding on and remodeling. We're happy to have bought our property a few years ago, but as any homeowners know, owning a home just adds to your list of projects and chores because there's always improvements to be made and maintenance to be done. On our burgeoning homestead, we have chickens, guineas, a few goats, and our most recent additions-rabbits.

About This Blog

I picked the name Petalz and Finz a couple years ago when I decided to try Etsy out. I wanted to custom make some baby related items and have things for girls and boys. I felt the name incorporated both my kids (at the time) into it--petalz for Ivy and finz for Finn.

I haven't had time to do much of anything with my Etsy for a while, but it's still my in my long term goals. In the mean time, I'm having fun with this blog thing. I've found some creative inspiration through my own posting, but also through many other wonderful blogs out there.
